When should I start brushing my child’s teeth?

Date: August 18, 2013 Author: Clonmel Children's Dental Clinic Categories: FAQ

As soon as the first teeth erupt they should be brushed daily. This early introduction to the routine of oral hygiene is an important part of the prevention of tooth decay. Until the child is 2 years old use a toothbrush and water only. As soon as the child is over 2 years, a small amount (pea-sized) amount of fluoride toothpaste should be introduced.

Tooth-brushing should be supervised twice per day, in the evening and one other time during the day.

Children under the age of 7 may not have the manual dexterity to brush alone – they will need the help of an adult with their brushing.
